Overview

Paldalmun is the southern main gate guarding Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, and a representative gateway into the fortress walls. Built with a solid stone base and an imposing pavilion above, it showcases both Hwaseong’s defensive structure and the architectural beauty of the late Joseon period. The area in front of the gate has long been a hub for transportation and commerce, and it still feels lively today. Nearby, the fortress trail connects to traditional markets and food alleys—perfect for a “sightseeing → walk → food” route—and it serves as a great starting point for exploring Suwon Hwaseong. Paldalmun is also a great spot for photos: during the day, the lines of the gate and walls stand out clearly, and toward sunset, warm light wraps around the pavilion and transforms the atmosphere. It’s an ideal place to begin a Suwon Hwaseong trip, or to use as the start/end point of a fortress walk—highly recommended to include at least once in your itinerary.
