Overview

Janganmun is the northern gate and the main entrance of Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon. It is the largest and most imposing of the four main gates, serving as the symbolic central gateway of the city. The name “Jangan (長安)” means “capital,” implying the idea of another Seoul. This reflects King Jeongjo’s vision of Suwon not merely as a provincial town, but as an important city connected to the capital, Hanyang (present-day Seoul). In fact, Janganmun was the gate used when the king entered Suwon from the capital, giving it great symbolic and political significance. Notably, Janganmun was built on a larger scale than Sungnyemun in Seoul, underscoring its prestigious status. It was designed not just as a northern gate, but as the official main gate of Hwaseong Fortress. The arched stone gateway (hongyemun), the two-story pavilion above it, and the semicircular outer wall (ongseong) in front clearly demonstrate the scientific defensive design of the fortress. Janganmun stands as a representative gateway of Hwaseong, combining symbolism, scale, and military function.
