Overview

Introduction

Hwaseomun Gate is the western entrance of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and one of its main gates, built during the reign of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty. The name “Hwaseo” means the western gate of Hwaseong. Today, it remains one of the representative attractions of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.

Hwaseomun has a different charm from the grand Janganmun Gate or Paldalmun Gate. Its calm appearance, naturally connected to the fortress wall trail, and its peaceful atmosphere harmonizing with the surrounding scenery make it especially memorable. It is also located close to Seobuk Gongsimdon, making the two sites easy to visit together.

Features of Hwaseomun Gate

Hwaseomun Gate shows both the practicality and beauty of Joseon-era fortress architecture. A gate pavilion stands above the entrance, where soldiers could observe the surrounding area. Around the gate, defensive structures designed to protect against enemy attacks are still well preserved.

Near Hwaseomun Gate is Seobuk Gongsimdon, one of the unique defensive facilities of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. Seobuk Gongsimdon is a hollow watchtower-like structure built to monitor enemy movements and respond to attacks. By viewing Hwaseomun Gate and Seobuk Gongsimdon together, visitors can understand that Suwon Hwaseong was not just a fortress, but a carefully designed military city.

Highlights

1. Enjoy Hwaseomun along the fortress wall trail

Hwaseomun Gate is naturally connected to the fortress wall trail, making it a pleasant place to explore while taking a walk. After passing through the gate, you can walk along the top of the fortress wall and enjoy a view of Suwon Hwaseong’s structure and the surrounding landscape.

2. Visit Seobuk Gongsimdon together

Right next to Hwaseomun Gate is Seobuk Gongsimdon, one of the representative defensive structures of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. Since the two structures are located close to each other, they are easy to visit together and help visitors better understand the fortress’s defensive system.

3. A great photo spot

Hwaseomun Gate is also popular as a photo spot, with its fortress walls, gate pavilion, and surrounding scenery creating a beautiful harmony. During the day, it offers a neat and historic atmosphere, while at sunset, it becomes a scenic place filled with warm light.
